Secrets of the Oregon Dunes How Did All That Sand Get Here Anyway?

This photograph of a ranger's display table shows the unique shape of lakes found in the Oregon Dunes. Often lakes are round or oval, but lakes found here have many arms and are stretched out in several directions. Why? Well, long ago, moving sand blocked creeks and rivers that flowed to the sea; the sand acted like a dam, causing water to back up and flood the valleys through which it flowed. You can find out more about moving sand, how it impacted earlier settlers, and what we have done to stop it in Secrets of the Oregon Dunes. Photo by Dina Pavlis.
